Second Vatican Council explored in Liverpool Hope Distinguished Lecture Series
Catholic theology is featuring strongly in a distinguished lecture series featuring a wide range of inspiring and educational talks is taking place at Liverpool Hope University over the coming months.
The lectures, which will be delivered by leading academics from across the UK throughout the 2023/24 academic year, are free to attend, and open to students, university staff and the general public. Pre-registration is not required and refreshments will be served beforehand at each of the lectures.
Professor Faraz Khan will bring a business perspective to the lecture series. An ESG investment and impact specialist with 25 years’ experience in the field of sustainability business, Professor Khan is CEO of global sustainability advisory, technology, and implementation company, Spectreco. His lecture will weigh up the opportunities and consequences of the Green New Deal.
Observer journalist Kenan Malik will address the limits of identity politics as he shares thoughts from his latest book- Not So Black and White – which provides a powerful new history of the idea of race. In his lecture, Malik will explain the real origins of ‘race’ in Western thought, tracing its path from those beginnings in the Enlightenment all the way to our own fractious world. In doing so he upends many assumptions underpinning today’s heated debates around race, culture, whiteness and privilege.

Within the Liverpool Hope University Distinguished Lecture series, the School of Humanities will deliver a programme of lectures on the four constitutions from the second Vatican council in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Liverpool.
Professor Reimund Bieringer, Professor Paul McPartlan, Dr Patricia Jones and Liverpool Hope’s Professor Pete McGrail will deliver lectures on each of the four constitutions, all of which will be preceded by a seminar providing a more focused discussion on selected issues.
