Liverpool Catholic high school praises form pupil after World Athletics gold win

Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s former high school are “very proud” after her gold medal in the World Athletics Championships 2023.

St. Julie’s Catholic High School, which played a crucial role in the athlete’s formative years, could not contain their excitement as Katarina secured the top spot in the highly competitive event. The win marked Katarina’s first victory since her world championship win in 2019.

The 30-year-old, from Wavertree, put up an impressive performance, scoring 6,740 points, which helped her win the event. The news of Katarina’s win has been met with great enthusiasm and celebration across Liverpool.

Kate McCourt, acting Headteacher, told the ECHO: “We are delighted to hear about Katarina’s latest success on the world stage. To achieve gold in the World Championships after tackling injuries reflects the true grit and determination of Katarina.

“At St. Julie’s Catholic High School Katarina demonstrated the key values needed to be a world-class athlete.

“Her resilience, hard work and commitment to her training over the years reflect the amazing woman she has become.

She continued: “Our school community is very proud of Katarina’s achievements, and she is a fantastic role model to our current students. We have no doubt that Katarina will continue to excel.”

In addition to the outpouring of support, her former athletics club, Liverpool Harriers, also congratulated her on her achievement.

The club took to social media to express their pride in their former student’s accomplishments and wrote on Twitter: “KJT – what a run…. GOLD…..”

They further congratulated her in a post on their website and said: “Congratulations to Katarina Johnson Thompson who is the Heptathlon world champion for the second time.

“…Kat ran a superb 800m, smashing her PB with 2:05.63, a second and a half behind Hall.”

To celebrate her massive win, Liverpool City Council placed a huge banner which reads: “Congratulations Katarina Johnson-Thompson” on Liverpool Town Hall.
