Cardinal leads messages of prayers and support from Catholic community for HRH the Princess of Wales
HE Cardinal Vincent Nichols has led messages of prayer and support from the Catholic community following the announcement that HRH The Princess of Wales is being treated for cancer.
“It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family…” said the Princess.
“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and at the time it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful.”
“The operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I’m now in the early stages of that treatment.”
HE Cardinal Nichols took to X to say: “I salute the courage of the Princess of Wales in speaking so openly about her personal health. Not only does she give encouragement to all who carry the burden of ill health, but she also speaks so movingly of the importance of her family life.
“Her message will move many people to pray for her and her full recovery, as I certainly will do myself.”
In a statement Archbishop Mark O’Toole of Cardiff said: “How deeply moving to hear the news from the Princess of Wales about her diagnosis. I offer my heartfelt prayer for her and the Royal Family at this time. I know the entire Catholic community in Wales will be offering their prayers and warmest good wishes too.”
Bishop Stephen Wright of the Diocese of Hexham & Newcastle offered “prayers for the Princess of Wales, her family and for all who are suffering with cancer.”
Lord (David) Alton said: “Thoughts and prayers with the Princess of Wales, her husband and children.”
The Catholic Police Guild of Northern Ireland issued a statement saying it “offers up our thoughts & prayers for Catherine & her family at this time. We all know families affected by cancer. We are mothers, wives, sister’s & daughters too.”
The CAFOD in Middlesborough group said “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Princess of Wales during this challenging time. May she find strength, courage, and comfort in the support of her loved ones and in the healing power of faith. Sending love and solidarity from all of us.”
The Church of England has also published a prayer for HRH The Princess of Wales:
Gracious God,
We pray for the continued recovery
Of the Princess of Wales,
For her husband, and for their family.
Grant unto them,
And to all who are affected by sickness,
Faith, hope, and knowledge of your love,
Through Jesus Christ our Lord.
