Buckfast Abbey looking for new young members to join its famous children’s choir

Since its foundation in September, 2018, Buckfast Abbey’s talented choir has become a group bound together by a love of singing and the pursuit of musical excellence.

Initially open exclusively to children attending a local Catholic Primary School, the choir is now poised to embark on an exciting new phase by introducing a dedicated group of Senior Choristers. This expansion aims to provide students in school years 7-9 with the chance to participate in weekly performances within breathtaking settings.

“Music has the power to transform lives, so we are thrilled to offer this unique opportunity to young musicians,” says Robert Pecksmith, Assistant Master of the Music at Buckfast Abbey.

“Through the establishment of a stream of Senior Choristers, we aim to nurture their talents, foster personal growth, and create unforgettable musical experiences. We look forward to welcoming students with a passion for singing who are seeking an exciting challenge,”

Located at the centre of a picturesque valley on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, Buckfast Abbey is the only English Benedictine monastery to be re-founded upon its original pre-reformation site. The original Abbey was founded in 1018 AD, by King Cnut. After the dissolution of the monasteries under King Henry VIII in 1538, the Abbey Church fell into ruin. It was rebuilt stone by stone upon its medieval foundations by a group of French monks.

Participants of the choir will benefit from a generous scholarship, which covers individual vocal and piano lessons, and entry for graded exams, enabling a broad musical education.

“If your child is currently in Years 6 or 7 and would be interested in this opportunity, please get in touch,” says Mr Pecksmith.
